ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Raleigh man was arrested Sunday in connection with an armed robbery after leading police on a car chase in Roanoke Rapids and then trying to flee on foot, police said.
Jereme Eugene Mackey, 22, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, second-degree kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a felon and resisting a public officer.  Police said he had an additional outstanding warrant for resisting a public officer in Wake County. Weldon police and deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to an armed robbery call around 5 p.m. in south Weldon, authorities said. While responding to the scene, officers tried to stop a car matching the suspect vehicle description. The car did not stop and led police on a chase into Roanoke Rapids, where Roanoke Rapids police also got involved, sheriff's officials said. The car crashed on Hinston Street and N.C. Highway 48, and the people inside fled on foot. Mackey was detained several minutes later, police said. He was being held at the Halifax County jail under a $1 million bond. He was scheduled to appear in court April 6.
