Raleigh man, 27, drowns in Virginia lake

A Raleigh man was pulled from Kerr Lake in Mecklenburg County, Va. Sunday morning after swimming with a friend Saturday evening.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VA. — A Raleigh man was pulled from Kerr Lake in Mecklenburg County, Va. Sunday morning after swimming with a friend Saturday evening.

Matthew Sandy with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said that two men were fishing on the lake Saturday and decided to go swimming at about 6 p.m. Graham Ferguson, 27, of Raleigh did not resurface after going underwater.

Authorities said that severe weather and nightfall meant that only a preliminary search along the shoreline was conducted Saturday night and the search resumed Sunday morning.

Ferguson’s body was pulled from the lake at about 11:30 a.m.

No further information was available.
