Posted — UpdatedHarrison Johnson of Raleigh spent Memorial Day selling ice cream and raising awareness about his fundraising efforts.
Johnson wants to raise $100,000 to help maintain the Pearl Harbor memorial. As of Tuesday, Harrison has raised about $4,500.
His willingness to raise money was spurned by a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, home of the USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.
"I was encouraged by my third-grade landmark project after reading, studying and writing about the Pearl Harbor Memorial," Johnson said. "My family actually said 'let's go!' so we went. When I got back it was all I could talk about."
