RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh is one of the safest U.S. capital cities to live in, according to a new study from WalletHub.

The only capital city that beat Raleigh was Austin, Texas.

Raleigh is affordable and provides high-quality education and healthcare when compared to other U.S. capitals, according to the new study.

When researchers were evaluating the best state capitals to live in, they focused on employment opportunities, housing costs, cultural-educational amenities, cost of living and safety.

Raleigh is among one of the top five U.S. capital cities with the highest percentage of adults with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The study also pointed out that Raleigh has one of the lowest premature-death rates out of all 50 U.S. capital cities.

"Capital cities that have reinvented themselves with vibrant downtowns, new industries, and connected in some way to the global economy are doing fine," said Dick Simpson, a professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Others are backwaters and their population remains mostly unchanged."
