Raleigh honors George Floyd as his NC family members push for Memorial Center
They want to create a George Floyd Memorial Center. A place where people can learn and get job training - among other things - regardless of what they look like, or where they came from.
Posted — UpdatedThat marks the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin.
Floyd was born in North Carolina and has family here, including his uncle, Roger Floyd.
"[It} was devastation for our family," Roger Floyd said.
It also includes Thomas McLaurin, who is George Floyd’s Cousin.
"We have sort of moved past that, now it's time to move forward and heal this nation," McLaurin said.
They ask people to use the Day of Enlightenment to do something good for someone else.
"We must act, we need to get things done," said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin.
Floyd’s family hopes to make an even bigger impact in the city.
"This is going to be phenomenal," Roger Floyd said.
They want to create a George Floyd Memorial Center. A place where people can learn and get job training – among other things - regardless of what they look like, or where they came from.
"They don't have to die to make a difference," McLaurin said.
When asked about demonstrations around officer-involved deaths happening now – like those in Elizabeth City- McLaurin says that there's ways to make an impact.
"Let's do it civilly, and if we can do that, I think we can move the needle forward in making change," he said.
