Raleigh Family Dollar stores fined after registers ring up wrong price

Two Family Dollar stores in Raleigh are among 10 statewide to be fined recently for what the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division calls "excessive price-scanner errors."

The Standards Division inspects retailers to check that advertised prices are what rings up on the register. When those prices don't match up, the stores can face a fine.

“Stores have a responsibility to make sure their pricing is accurate, and most stores pass inspection,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

In Raleigh, the Family Dollar on Raleigh Boulevard was fined $13,335 after errors of up to 10 percent of a sample purchase were found. The store was inspected six times between October 2020 and August 2021, with errors found each time.

The Family Dollar on Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh was fined $3,105 after inspections in June, July and September found prices ringing up that were different from the advertised price.
