RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh is creating hundreds of new affordable housing options but it’s still not enough to meet demand.

Gas, groceries and rent.

Prices are skyrocketing for just about everything, making it more difficult to afford the basics.

That’s not lost on Raleigh native and NCCU basketball coach Levelle Moton.

"The basic concept of having a roof over your head that you can afford and not looking over your shoulder. Not knowing if a landlord or someone is going to place a sign on your door saying you're past due," said Moton. "That should never happen, right?"

Last year, Moton teamed up with the city of Raleigh to transform his old neighborhood into a hub for equitable living.

Moton said the developers are securing the funding needed to start building a 17 home subdivision on Lane Street.

They’ll be available for people who make between 50 to 80 percent of the area’s median income.

"I hope it can serve as a blueprint and a template for not only other parcels of land and sites throughout the city but throughout the state of North Carolina," said Moton.

Since 2016, the city of Raleigh has created 2,872 affordable housing units. Another 544 are set to come online this year.

The city’s goal is to have 5,700 by 2026.

Moton said he’s grateful for the chance to help a community that played such a big role in his life.

"It comes back full circle. I'm extremely blessed for that," said Moton. "Sometimes I get speechless in terms of trying to find the right words to communicate that."

The City of Raleigh is holding a dedication for Coach Moton Saturday. Officials will unveil a statue in his honor at 913 East Lane Street.
