Raleigh councilman blasts owner of venomous snake
Raleigh City Councilman David Knight calls for a local ordinance banning ownership of venomous snakes, saying it was "irresponsible, reckless and dangerous behavior" by a resident to allow a deadly zebra cobra to escape last week.
I would also want to comment about two incidents that have occurred in in district he recently um as a consequence of irresponsible, reckless and dangerous behaviour by individuals. Um and one of those is the escape of the Zebra Cobra and the other is the car wreck into small businesses, Long Glenwood entering five points area. Um Some have made light of the zebra cobra issue, but it could have ended tragically and I think we've got to take this issue very seriously. First of all, like to think uh Raleigh Police Department and also local and state animal control personnel who put their lives at risk um to go out and capture uh this dangerous wild animal as well as um then taking in the rest of the the dangerous snakes that were in possession of these folks. Um Since this has come to light, I've been working with the our legal staff uh to put together um a response to this, a legal response um by way of ordinance text change. And that proposal will be coming forward as soon as possible when we come back after our break. Um And there are also obviously still um actions being looked at investigated by our district attorney, as well as our police department on this issue. Uh And so we will be looking. I'll be looking to put that proposal before you all for a public conversation uh about how to deal with this uh this very serious issue.
