RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh skyline could soon see its tallest tower in city history.
The City Council cleared the way for a project called 'The Nexus' during Tuesday night's meeting. It’s a major development, slated to stand 40 stories tall, that's been years in the making.

The development is slated for McDowell Street, where the former News and Observer building used to be. Currently, nearby PNC Plaza is the tallest building in Raleigh at 33 stories.

Initially, the land was only zoned for buildings to be up to 20 stories tall. The City Council's rezoning on Tuesday night allows for up to 2,425 residential spaces, along with retail shops, and office spaces.

"Several of these 40-story zoning cases have come in front of us and every one of them has got approved. I think we're nearing the time where it's time to look at downtown zoning and send a more definite signal that this is where we want tall building," said City Councilman Patrick Buffkin.

It is unclear when construction will start on the project. Construction was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
