RALEIGH, N.C. — A Friday afternoon bank robbery in north Raleigh led to a police chase that ended with a crash that closed part of Interstate 440 near Glenwood Avenue, police said.

The Capital Bank branch at 6511 Falls of Neuse Road was robbed at about 12:30 p.m., and John Weston, who works at the DSparada Color Salon across the street, said he saw a car speed out of the parking lot.

"He gets in his car and drives away, and then probably a few minutes later, after I finish my client's hair, I see the police out there putting up crime scene tape," Weston said. "I said, 'Oh man, the bank just got robbed.'"

A Capital Bank branch on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh was robbed on March 1, 2019.

Police spotted a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car as it was getting on westbound I-440. Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver sped away, prompting a pursuit, police said.

The suspected robber crashed into another car on I-440 just west of Glenwood Avenue, police said, and the suspect , identified as Jamari Shalick Wilson, 22, was taken into custody.

Both Wilson and the driver of the other car were taken to WakeMed for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

"We are just glad nobody at the bank got hurt because we bank over there," Weston said. "That is why we were checking on them, just to make sure everything was all right. But it was just kind of scary."

Wilson was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony speeding to elude arrest and traffic violations.

The crash and the police response closed all westbound lanes of I-440 for about an hour, and tie-ups on the highway lasted for much of the afternoon.
