RALEIGH, N.C. — Skies will become more and more cloudy on Saturday before a rain system moves into the Triangle on Sunday.

A storm system is moving east through the United States, WRAL meteorologist Peta Sheerwood said, with Kansas and Oklahoma seeing rain and Colorado and South Dakota seeing snow showers.

In North Carolina, Saturday was dry and fairly warm, with high temperatures reaching into the 70s in some spots.

Scattered showers will move into the Triangle on Sunday morning. Sheerwood said she doesn’t expect the day to be a washout, but heavier rain will start to fall Sunday night.

That rain will continue into Monday morning. Another round of showers will move through Monday afternoon before skies start to clear.

Over the next three days, one-tenth of an inch of rain could fall east of Raleigh, and about half an inch of rain could fall in Durham. Western North Carolina will see the most rain, with an inch or more expected.

The next few days will have mild temperatures, with highs in the mid-to-upper 60s.

After the rain clears, Tuesday’s high will reach the upper 50s. New Year’s Eve celebrations could be chilly, with Tuesday night lows dropping to the upper 30s.

New Year’s Day will be stay mild, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the low 50s.
