RALEIGH, N.C. — Steady rain will lighten up through the late afternoon and evening hours on Monday, but the Triangle won't see truly clear skies until Tuesday morning, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

Through 4 p.m. Monday, the rainfall that started with a steady downpour on Sunday added up to almost an inch of rain in Raleigh and Durham, with more than an inch adding up in Fayetteville.

The southeastern quarter of the state saw the greatest amount of rain through Monday and will end up with the greatest accumulation, Gardner said.

A chilly wind made Monday's rain even less pleasant, and temperatures are forecast to drop from a morning high near 50 degrees into the 20s Monday night.

Hour-by-hour

The coming cold and leftover precipitation to combine to form some snow flurries along the North Carolina-Virginia border, but nothing will accumulate, Gardner said.

7-Day Forecast

Tuesday and Wednesday promise clearer skies, with highs only in the 40s, before clouds return on Thursday and linger into the weekend.
