RALEIGH, N.C. — A powerful storm system crossed North Carolina on Saturday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue numerous tornado watches and warnings.

The National Weather Service radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado in Harnett County at about 8:10 p.m. That system continued to move to the northeast, prompting warnings for parts of Johnston, Wake, Nash and Franklin Counties until about 10:10 p.m.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, but a funnel cloud was reported east of Fuquay-Varina in southern Wake County around 8:55 p.m.

Damage was reported throughout the Medowbrook subdivision in Garner. Several shoppers were forced to huddle together inside of the Target at the White Oak Shopping Center on US in Garner, while others across the area hid in closets and bathtubs.

Severe flooding was reported by motorists at the eastbound I-40 and I-440 split in Raleigh, and on Lake Boone Trail at the I-440 ramp in Raleigh.

As of 11 p.m. Raleigh saw .63 inches of rain. Fayetteville saw nearly an inch and Rocky Mount had more than an inch of rain.

"The threat for storms is out of our area tonight," WRAL Meteorologist Mike Maze said. "Sunday's weather will be a lot calmer, it will be cooler, but there will not be any severe weather."
