DURHAM, N.C. — For many colleges and universities, graduations are being held in a more traditional way for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

North Carolina Central University had scheduled events for Friday, but shifted some to Saturday with rain over the Triangle. The adjusted schedule has the baccalaureate ceremony beginning Saturday at 8 a.m. and the graduate and professional ceremony at noon. Both services will be held at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

Both ceremonies will stream live on the university’s website, Facebook page and YouTube channel.

N.C. Central will honor both spring 2021 grads and 2020 spring and fall grads who didn’t have ceremonies because of the pandemic.

At East Carolina University, graduates had to wait an extra half hour to turn their tassels. A 1 p.m. undergraduate commencement planned for the colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Business, Nursing and Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was pushed back to 1:30 p.m. due to the threat of severe weather.

Businesses will also be busy from all the families coming to Durham.

Durham calls it the marathon weekend because graduation is usually Mother’s Day weekend. Last weekend, Duke held its graduation with an address from star musician John Legend.

The Campbell University Class of 2021 heard from Gov. Roy Cooper on Friday.

Drs. Anthony Fauci and Kizzmekia Corbett are the speakers for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where a series of in-person, ticketed ceremonies will be held throughout the weekend of May 14-16.
