RALEIGH, N.C. — After temperatures in Raleigh again climbed into the high 90s Monday – the 13th straight day of temperatures over 90 degrees – some parts of the Triangle saw thunderstorms throughout the evening.

Monday was full of sun as temps reached 95 degrees. Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms popped up in eastern Wake and northwestern Johnston counties, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning that included parts of Clayton and Smithfield. Those storms had measured wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

Other severe thunderstorm warning popped up across the area, including a storm in Roxboro that caused some damage.

But there is good news.

"The heatwave is coming to an end," WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell said.

Campbell said an approaching cold front will drop temperatures while increasing the chance for rain.

Rain, highs in 80s offer relief from heat

The milder temperatures move in Tuesday along with a cold front and a better chance for rain. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, and mostly cloudy skies will keep things milder.

Rain planner

At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, temperatures will be in the upper 70s. At noon, they'll be in the low 80s, and they'll top out in the mid 80s.

There will be a level 1 risk for severe weather across the viewing area, and strong wind gusts and heavy rain will be possible.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said, with more than 1.5 inches of rain possible in Raleigh, we could get a "soaking." The rain will likely start overnight and in the morning, increasing throughout the afternoon.

"We'll have lots of rain and much cooler temperatures," Gardner said.

7-Day Forecast

Highs are also expected to stay in the mid 80s for Wednesday before moving into the upper 80s for Thursday and Friday. Compared to last week, which featured highs in the 90s each day, the change should feel significant.

The weekend looks typical for summer, with hot temperatures in the 90s and a chance for afternoon storms.
