RALEIGH, N.C. — The Triangle is in for one more steamy day Sunday before a cold front brings drier, cooler weather for the work week.

"The weather pattern that triggered our thunderstorms Saturday evening has moved to our east, so the chance for storms Sunday stays to the north and east of Raleigh," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze. "Areas to the south and west of Raleigh probably stay dry on Sunday."

The most humid part of the day comes as about 1,000 people swim, run and bike the Ironman 70.3 triathlon through Chatam and Wake counties. The race starts at 7 a.m. at Jordan Lake – just about an hour after sunrise – with a forecast for 84 percent humidity. By they time they reach the finish line in downtown Raleigh the humidity dips to a still-unpleasant 60 percent and the temperature forecast is for the low 80s.

"We could see a large contrast in the temperatures from north to south Sunday if the cloud cover holds steady throughout the day to the north. In the southern counties where it will be partly to mostly sunny, it's likely to be quite warm," Maze said.

The game changes Sunday night, when a cold front moves into North Carolina from the west, bringing a somewhat cooler and noticeably less humid air mass.

7-Day Forecast

"You will definitely feel a difference in the air on Monday," Maze said. "Our dew points drop from the 70s to the upper 40s and low 50s."

The forecast for Monday through Thursday calls for temperatures in the low 80s and mostly clear skies.
