Flooding, wind damage possible as storms sweep through NC

Much of the area, including the Triangle, is under both a flash flood watch and a level 1 risk for severe storms.

The flood watch extends into Wednesday, and until it expires, drivers should be alert to the possibility of high water in some places due to consistent rain and storms. Anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rain are possible, according to Wilmoth.

"Overnight the heaviest rain will be in our eastern and southern counties," Wilmoth said.

In Raleigh, there will be a 70 percent chance for rain Tuesday with the chance for some storms that could be severe by late afternoon or evening. The rain chance remains at 70 percent on Wednesday.

According to Wilmoth, wind damage, heavy rain and hail are the biggest threats associated with these storms.

"We could see some downed trees or some localized flooding in areas," said Wilmoth. "The chance of rain is highest late in the afternoon and evening."

The highest rain totals will be in the extreme eastern parts of North Carolina and coastal plains.

"It won't rain all day Tuesday, but you should have the rain gear ready," Wilmoth said.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be cool for late July, with highs in the low to mid 80s.
