Raleigh, N.C. — The Virginia International Raceway will host a family-friendly preview event in Raleigh this week to promote its upcoming IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The preview takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, at the Lynnwood Brewing Concern, 1053 E. Whitaker Mill Rd., Raleigh.
During the event, visitors can check out race cars on display and meet with Bryan Sellers of Paul Miller Racing. Miller got his start in racing by winning the World Karting National Championship as a kid, I'm told. Now he’s got championships in pro racing under his belt and looking for another next month at VIR. Admission is free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The IMSA championship is Aug. 17 to Aug. 19 at the raceway, which is about 90 minutes from Raleigh. This year’s event will feature a performance from Sanford native and The Voice runner-up Britton Buchanan.
And, of course, there will be lots of racing. The series features top racing professionals, nationally and globally, hitting the track in the most technologically advanced race cars, from Lamborghinis to Corvettes to BMWs, according to the event description.
Drivers top speeds of 190 miles per hour during the nearly three-hour race, dubbed the Michelin GT Challenge, that includes the "climbing esses," a section of the course considered by many race drivers as one of the most challenging and intimidating in North America, it says.
