Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Raleigh

A raccoon found on the 3400 block of Arrowhead Drive tested positive for rabies.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A raccoon found on the 3400 block of Arrowwood Drive in Raleigh tested positive for rabies.

Officials believe the raccoon came into contact with two dogs. Those dogs were up-to-date on their rabies shot, and the owner was provided with counseling concerning appropriate steps that should be taken.

Wake County health officials recommend:

  • Do not approach animals you don't know
  • All pets have current rabies vaccinations. If your pet is outdoors, officials recommend getting a booster vaccine.
  • Don't feed stray animals -- including cats and dogs
  • Don't leave trash or food outside unless its in a trash can with a tight lid
