RALEIGH, N.C. — One of the most popular attractions at the N.C. State Fair is taking a break this year.

For many years the rabbit barn, located near the Marketplace and N.C. State Howling Cow ice cream, was home to a large collection of rabbits on display in cages throughout the building.

“The number of exhibitors in our rabbit show has declined over the years,” fair manager Kent Yelverton said earlier this month. “The facility that was used to house the rabbit show was in poor condition as well. We felt it was a good time to remove this building and pursue other possibilities.”

The barn was torn down in the spring and replaced with green space and picnic tables.

"All the food vendors that fairgoers typically find in that area will still be there,” Yelverton said. "It’s just our hope the traffic flow will be much improved this year. We are going to look after this year’s fair to consider other improvements in this area."

Rabbits can still be seen at the FFA Children's Barnyard, near the Village of Yesteryear. That exhibit also include goats, chickens and cows.
