Quarterbacks in 2018 NFL Draft class include franchise options, risks

The question teams, fans and analysts all want to know the same thing: Is there a franchise quarterback available?

RALEIGH, N.C. — Quarterbacks set the tone in this spring's NFL Draft, just like they do in many years. USC's Sam Darnold, Wyoming's Josh Allen, UCLA's Josh Rosen, OU's Baker Mayfield and Louisville's Lamar Jackson make up the much-talked-about list of QBs head of Thursday's big event.

The question teams, fans and analysts all want to know the answer to is the same: Is there a franchise quarterback available?

"There is one in there, maybe two," according to former ECU and NFL QB coach Steven Logan. "But who they are is anybody's guess."

The more prototypical NFL quarterback in this draft class is UCLA's Josh Rosen. The 6-foot-4, 218 pound athlete was the first true freshman to ever start at QB for the Bruins. There is no another arm close to being as regular a fit in the league at Rosen is.

"You watch that kid's mechanics, you watch him when he is in the pocket," Logan said. "Part of the (pre-draft) job is to find out what's wrong with the kid -- if you're going to give a kid a billion dollars, you want to know what's wrong with him.

"The only thing they found with Josh Rosen is

he's too smart."{{/a}}

Event that quality makes Rosen the ideal intellectual to run an NFL offense.

Oklahoma gives the draft one of the more polarizing player's in this draft in Baker Mayfield. He's also a QB who can run the read-pass option and pass well. But Mayfield's attitude raises questions about whether or not picking the Heisman Winner is the best idea for teams looking for a quarterback.

"Anything's possible, it just takes one team to like you," Logan said. "I'd rather be wrong taking him than not taking him. He's explosive, he's a competitor, I kind of like players with a chip on their shoulders and something to prove.

"The guy that will spit in your eye and make you like it, if he does find a way to succeed, that locker room will follow him anywhere."
