Quail Ridge hosts children's authors this month
They include Newbery-winning author Richard Peck with his new book "Secrets at Sea" for kids ages 8 to 12.

Quail Ridge Books often has children's authors at the store on Wade Avenue in Raleigh.
Here is who is scheduled to visit this month:
- 5 p.m., Oct. 12. Cartoonist Mark Pett (creator of the Lucky Cow strip) has created a picture book to share. "The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes" tells the story of Beatrice Bottomwell, who has never (not once!) made a mistake ... until ... For ages 4 to 8.
- 5 p.m., Oct. 13. The Newbery-winning author Richard Peck returns to Quail Ridge with "Secrets at Sea." Helena and her mouse siblings stow away with the Cranstons on a voyage to England in 1887. Carol, a Quail Ridge staffer, declares it one of the best books out this fall for young readers, with lovable, memorable characters and Richard Peck's fine writing. For ages 8 to 12. Peck won the Newbery Medal in 2001 for his book "A Year Down Yonder."
- 7 p.m., Oct. 18. N.C. authors Stephen Messer and Kathleen Churchyard visit with their books. Messer will be there with his book "The Death of Yorik Mortwell," which might be popular with fans of The Series of Unfortunate Events. For ages 9 to 12. Churchyard's book "Bye for Now," is about a girl whose wish for someone else's life came true. For ages 8 to 12.
And if you do have a fan of the Unfortunate Events series in your house, author Daniel Handler, who wrote under the name Lemony Snicket, will be at Quail Ridge in January with his new young adult novel "Why We Broke Up." For ages 14 and up.
