THE BEST OF THE REST OF 2019

An American Sunrise: Poems By Joy Harjo
1. An American Sunrise: Poems by Joy Harjo [poetry]

Susan says, “The latest new volume from the first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States, informed by her tribal history and connection to the land.”

Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster By Adam Higginbotham

Sarah says, “Higginbotham pulls together the science, politics, history and the human stories in an amazing feat of journalism and compelling storytelling.”

Gather at the River: 25 Authors on Fishing Edited By David Joy
3. Gather at the River: 25 Authors on Fishing edited by David Joy [Southern nonfiction]

Cam says, “Imagine sitting down with your fishing buddies sharing fishing stories. Now imagine that your fishing buddies are all fantastic authors who have a way with words! While reading this collection of essays, I was taken back to childhood memories, longed for simpler times well before I came along, related to legendary stories of "The Big One," and marveled at the majesty of nature. Whether you are the bass fisherman who loads your boat full of baitcasters and electronics, the fly fisherman who enjoys solitude and the sound of babbling brooks, the shark fisherman who loves thrills and screaming reels, or maybe the thought of fishing just brings back fond memories of Grandpa with his cane-pole, this one's for you.”

The Optimist's Telescope: Thinking Ahead in a Reckless Age By Bina Venkataraman

Belinda says, “We can think better, learn to make better decisions and achieve much better results, and this book provides real world examples of those who have done just that. It offers a clear-eyed view of how we can conquer short-sighted incentives and ultimately focus on ways to improve our lives and our world.”

The Shanghai Free Taxi: Journeys with the Hustlers and Rebels of the New China By Frank Langfitt

Sandra says, “A must-read for anyone who wants to understand modern day China.”

How to Think Like a Fish: And Other Lessons from a Lifetime in Angling By Jeremy Wade

Cam says, “Wade brings the same dramatic storytelling that made his show, River Monsters, such a hit to this attempt to share his ‘secrets’ to catching big river fish. This book is a rare opportunity to learn from a fisherman's honest stories of failure, trial and error, and natural instinct that made him successful all over the world. What's more are the harrowing and urgent warnings of the trends of these amazing creatures disappearing in their wild habitats. I expected this book to change the way I look at fishing. What I did not expect was for it to change the way I looked at my own habits and consumption!”
