Quail Ridge Books and acclaimed Raleigh children's book author Kelly Starling Lyons are teaming up for a virtual event this week as Lyons debuts her latest books for early readers.

Lyons is the author of "Ty's Travels: Zip, Zoom!" and "Ty's Travels: All Aboard," the first I Can Read series that features a Black family. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m., Sept. 1, online.

The event will pair up Lyons with illustrator Nina Mata. There will be a reading and a simple art project. It's best for kids ages 3 to 6.

According to the description of the event, Lyons aimed to make something that "embodied Black Boy Joy" with the series that follows a young boy named Ty.

Lyons is the author of 17 books, including picture books, chapter books, fiction and nonfiction. Her books include "Going Down Home with Daddy," "Sing a Song: How Lift Every Voice & Sing Inspired Generations" and the Jada Jones chapter book series. "Sing a Song" was a Caldecott Honor-winning book earlier this year.
The event is free. To participate, you'll need to register via Eventbrite.
