HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Residents can weigh in Wednesday on a plan to transform a busy Holly Springs intersection affected by the new North Carolina Highway 540 interchange project.

As hundreds of people move to Holly Springs, the town said public input is crucial.

The interchange will be near Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road. Planners want to know if the public would like to see shopping, open space or other developments in the area.

On Wednesday, the state Department of Transportation and the Town of Holly Springs will present plans and ask for feedback and questions about the development and land use around the interchange.

Work has already started to make room for N.C. 540 traffic. A closure on Holly Springs Road and Kildare Farm Road is set for Monday.

Several people told WRAL News they know the town needs the highway, but the years of construction will result in more traffic problems.

With an estimated cost of $2.2 billion, the Complete 540 project will extend the Triangle Expressway from the N.C. 55 Bypass in Apex to U.S. 64/U.S. 264 (I-87) in Knightdale, completing the 540 Outer Loop around the greater Raleigh area and linking Apex, Cary, Clayton, Garner, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs and Raleigh.

The project is also expected to relieve traffic congestion once it is complete.

Wednesday's meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Sunrise United Methodist Church.
