WILMINGTON, N.C. — A 64-year-old Brunswick County man on Thursday received a 35-year prison sentence on charges that he abused at least 20 children while making pornography over three decades.

In April, Wilbert Robert Schmidt pleaded guilty to two counts of production of child pornography.

U.S. District Judge James C. Dever handed down a sentence more than double what federal guidelines recommend "in light of Schmidt's persistent criminal conduct, his sadistic abuse of children and the huge quantity of child pornography he created and maintained," according to a statement from U.S. Attorney George Holding.

In January 2009, 6,432 Polaroid and framed pictures of child pornography were seized from Schmidt's house, according to prosecutors. They said that 6,112 of the pictures either had Schmidt in them or were taken by him.

Prosecutors said further investigation revealed that Schmidt had sexually abused children as young as 6. Not all of the victims have been identified.
