GARNER, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is considering proposals to change a busy Garner intersection, and one option could be the first of its kind in the state.

Plans are in the works to expand both U.S. Highway 70 and the section of Hammond Road and Timber Drive, where they meet.

Engineers are attempting to relieve congestion at U.S. 70 and Timber Drive.

A meeting Tuesday will allow community members to see some of the options and share their opinion with the DOT.

One proposal would build a bridge and interchange. The more notable option would build a continuous flow intersection.

The intersection would be the first of its kind in the state, and the design adds signals and left-turn crossover lanes.

It allows through traffic and left turns to happen on the same green light.

While a continuous flow intersection is new to North Carolina, other states using them have seen reduced congestion and prevented crashes.

The continuous flow intersection would cost about half as much as a new bridge.

The DOT meeting is from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Capital Church.
