DUDLEY, N.C. — Wayne County sheriff's deputes were searching for a 31-year-old wanted for shooting and critically injuring another man early Saturday.

Investigators said that Tavarus Juante Wooten, 31, and Samuel Devon Cannon got into an altercation around 5:45 a.m. Cannon pulled out a gun and shot Wooten numerous times, deputies said.

Deputies found Wooten at 115 Pinehill Lane in Dudley, and medical workers transported him to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Wooten was treated and transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital on Saturday evening.

Warrants have been issued against Cannon for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries. He remained at large.

Anyone with information about Cannon's whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff's office at 919-731-1482 or Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255. Callers to Crime Stoppers never have to identify themselves.

On Sept. 4, Cannon was placed on probation for assaulting a handicapped person and second-degree burglary, according to state Department of Correction records.

Cannon has a lengthy criminal record dating from 1994 and has been imprisoned for violating probation six times.
