DURHAM, N.C. — A pregnant woman who was hurt last weekend when high winds helped topple a tree onto the car in which she was sitting died Friday, her family said.

Wendy Rodriguez, 30, and her boyfriend were in the car in the 300 block of West Trinity Avenue on Saturday afternoon when the tree fell on top of the vehicle, authorities said.

Her boyfriend suffered injuries to his face but was able to escape. First responders helped Rodriguez from the car, but authorities said she was in cardiac arrest.

She was taken to Duke University Hospital, where doctors later pronounced her brain dead.

Rodriguez, a native of Honduras, was five months pregnant. A cousin is her only family in the country, and he had hoped to keep her alive through life support to save the unborn child, which he said had survived the accident.

The unborn child died with Rodriguez, her family said. She is survived by four other children.
