Powerball lottery winnings email scam reemerges with new twist

An old scam is making the rounds again with a new spin.

Don’t fall for an email claiming that Powerball lottery jackpot winners are on a philanthropic mission. It’s part of scam to get people’s info and money.

It’s been nearly 11 years since Tom and Kathleen Morris claimed a $228 million Powerball jackpot.

In recent years, scammers have tried using the Minnesota couple's dream come true to lure sensitive information out of you.

An email recently landed in the WRAL News account. The station had allegedly been selected to get a $7 million donation to help fight COVID-19 in the community.

However, three years ago, the same scam email came to the station’s email account with a different reason: $7 million to fight cancer.

Four years ago, the station received another scam email for $4 million and a religious calling.

The scams are after your personal information. It’s likely they’ll ask for money to complete the fake transaction. Even responding to an email can put you at risk for getting more scam emails.
