FORT FISHER, NORTH CAROLINA — A case of a potentially deadly virus has been found in a mosquito along the North Carolina coast.

Officials in New Hanover County said one positive sample of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE, was found in a mosquito trapped at Fort Fisher.

The virus spreads to humans through mosquito bites.

EEE was detected in two horses in Pender and Brunswick counties.

Officials are warning people to be vigilant to avoid bug bites but say there is no reason to panic.

In humans, EEE symptoms include fever, chills and body aches.
