Pot Farm Discovered in Pittsboro Home

Michael Wayne Smith, 45, of 2599 Mount Gilead Road, was arrested March 2 after threatening Chatham County deputies. A subsequent search of his property led to gun and drug charges.

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Michael Wayne Smith, 45, of 2599 Mount Gilead Road, was arrested March 2 after threatening Chatham County deputies.

Deputies responding to a report of multiple shots being fired found Smith, who was intoxicated at the time, in possession of a .223 caliber rifle and 30-round magazine.

Deputies returned to Smith's home five days later with a search warrant for other illegal weapons and found a semi-automatic weapon, more ammunition and and an indoor marijuana growing operation.

Those discoveries resulted in additional charges of felonious possession of firearm by a felon, felonious maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances, felonious possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and/or deliver marijuana, felonious manufacturing marijuana, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Smith was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in Pittsboro District Court on March 7.
