OAK ISLAND, N.C. — Someone spotted some menacing-looking fins near a North Carolina beach on Thursday, prompting some to fear large sharks were swimming near the shore.

Oak Island Water Rescue posted pictures to social media Thursday, but after an investigation, it turns out the "fins" belonged to a school of manta rays.

"We don't want to alarm anyone because this is a very natural thing," the post read, explaining the sharks were spotted near 4300 East Beach Drive, the area between Publix and the 40th Street Inlet Park in Oak Island."

If you swim in the ocean, experts recommend swimming with a buddy and staying close to shore. It's best not to go in the water at dawn or dusk.

Experts also say you avoid swimming if you see fish or seals around.

The Ocearch tracker can be used to see where sharks have been spotted recently in North Carolina.
