The spring and summer children's consignment sale season is gearing up. The first sale, the massive Kids Exchange at the NC State Fairgrounds, opens to the public on Jan. 24.

From there, we have nearly two dozen sales that will pop up in February and March. The sales, typically run by local moms, feature gently used clothing, toys and other gear. They are great places to stock up on summer clothes and other items for your little ones. At the same time, they also offer a great place to sell the clothes and toys your kids no longer use.

Our consignment sale database is updated for the upcoming season. (A few sales have yet to set their dates or locations.)

If you're attending your first sale this season, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Go prepared! It can be a little crazy searching for deals. So know what you want before you go. Be ready with sizes and a list of all you'll need. Bring a laundry basket, wagon or stroller (without the kid) to haul your loot.

2. Leave the young kids at home if you can (though we all know that's easier said than done).

3. Sign up to volunteer or consign to shop early and nab the best deals.

4. If you're a first-time mom, pregnant mom or grandma, also note that some sales have special shopping hours for you.
