WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's reputation as a polarizing figure carries over to the potential for his impeachment by Congress, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The nation is fairly split when it comes to questions about his request that Ukrainian officials investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son and about whether he should be impeached because of it.

Forty-seven percent of respondents said the allegations against Trump were extremely or quite serious, while 28 percent said they weren't serious or are made up.

Nearly two in five people surveyed said there was not enough evidence to impeach the president and the issue should be dropped, while a quarter said the House should move forward now with impeachment hearings and close to a third said more evidence needs to be collected before proceeding.

Fifty-three percent said the president hasn't been truthful about his discussion with Ukraine's president, while 38 percent said he has been honest.

Forty-four percent said the issue is a politically motivated attack on Trump, while 51 percent said the allegations are serious and should be investigated.

Hart Research Associates surveyed 800 adults nationwide between Friday and Sunday for the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46 percentage points.
