CLAYTON, N.C. — A Wilson woman tried to evade arrest on shoplifting charges by hiding in the trunk of her car outside a Clayton Walmart, town officials said.

Loss prevention officials at the Walmart, on Town Centre Boulevard, saw Melinda Reeves, 34, putting merchandise in her purse Tuesday.

When staff members approached Reeves, she became confrontational and ran out of the store, officials said.

When Clayton police arrived, Walmart staff said no cars were seen leaving the area of the parking lot where Reeves was seen running.

After finding no one inside cars, police reviewed surveillance video, which showed the car Reeves had arrived in.

When inspecting the car, an officer saw the trunk lid was ajar and noticed movement.

Reeves got out of the trunk when police asked her to, officials said.

Police found a bottle of wine, a package of laundry detergent and a Little Mermaid toy. The merchandise was worth $16.83.

Reeves was charged with shoplifting and has been trespassed from all Walmarts.

She was taken to jail on a $2,500 bond.
