FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police said what started as a domestic violence incident ended with an officer being dragged as she tried to stop the suspect from getting away.

Chante Roshell Oates, 24, had just arrived from Florida to visit her grandmother who lives on Beuer Street. Officers said Oates is accused of getting into a fight with her grandmother inside her home, then hitting her grandmother and her grandmother's home with her car while driving drunk.

After crashing into the home, Oates returned to Beuer Street, where she hit a police officer investigating the earlier incident.

"She was able to get back into the vehicle and drag the officer probably about 50 feet and run over the officer's leg, causing some pretty serious injuries to her leg," said Sgt. Jeremy Glass, with the Fayetteville Police Department.

Oates' grandmother suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Neighbors said they couldn't believe something like this happened in their community since it is usually quiet.

Oates is facing a number of charges:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official
  • Assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury
  • Felony hit and run
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Resisting a public officer
  • Injury to personal property
  • Driving while impaired
  • Felony fleeing to elude arrest

She remains in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $153,500 secured bond.
