DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Police Department has received reports that utility customers have been getting calls and e-mails asking for credit card numbers to pay past due accounts.

These calls are fraudulent and are not being made by utility companies, police said.

Police warned people not to give their credit card numbers over the phone unless they initiate the call and are dealing with a reputable company.
