GARNER, N.C. — A man wanted for armed robbery was in police custody after barricading himself inside a Garner home on Sunday afternoon. Armed SWAT teams, K-9s, helicopters and an armored sheriff's truck with a sniper rifle on top were seen at the scene on Atchison Street and N.C. Highway 50.

Garner Police Captain Chris Clayton said on Saturday, police were called for a report of an armed robbery at a local business. Clayton said that after figuring out where the robbery suspect would be, officers got into a pursuit with the man on Sunday, but then discontinued the chase.

The man then crashed the car he was driving near Atchison Street and N.C. Highway 50, according to Clayton. Clayton said that someone then called 911 to report a person with a gun.

"We developed information that we believe the person was in an abandoned house," added Clayton.

The home was owned by Doug Tucker's family.

"That's my uncle's old house," described Tucker, adding that the home has been vacant since his uncle passed away four years ago.

Tucker said investigators found a busted back window and back door halfway open. Tucker said his mother gave the go-ahead for investigators to enter the house and get the man out.

After deploying Garner and Wake County SWAT teams, the man was taken into police custody shortly after 4 p.m.

"Anytime you use tear gas - because I'm familiar with it - it's going to be a little bit of damage," explained Tucker.

Public work crews spent the evening boarding up windows and doors on the home. The Tucker family said they planned to check out the home sometime this week.

Neighbors said they are thankful the situation ended peacefully.

This is a one off, and I hope to not see it happen again," said Paulette Burnside.

Garner police have not released the name of the man.
