Police Upgrade Charges Against 1 Teen, Release 1 in Shooting

Cumberland County sheriff's detectives upgraded charges against one teenager and released another teen in connection with a shooting on Saturday morning.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff's detectives upgraded charges against one teenager and released another teen in connection with a shooting on Saturday morning.

Jamel Rasheen Caugham, 21, of Fayetteville, got into an argument with Omar Ramone Vereen, 17, of 5847 Holland Street, and a second 17-year-old boy, police said. The confrontation occurred outside Vereen's house in the Shaw Heights subdivision.

Vereen shot Caugham in the face during the argument, officers said. A neighbor called police after hearing gunfire around 10 a.m.

Authorities added one count of attempted murder to the charges against Vereen. He had been jailed on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Police originally charged the second 17-year-old as an accessory but dropped that charge and released him.

Caugham suffered a single gunshot wound to the right cheek and was take to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. X-rays showed the bullet exited behind his ear. Caugham was treated and released within a few hours.

Vereen was being held under a $100,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
