BENSON, N.C. — A suspect was injured following an attempted bank robbery Tuesday afternoon in Benson, according to police.

Authorities said an armed suspect wearing a mask attempted to rob the PNC Bank at 400 South Wall Street at about 4:45 p.m..

Police said shots were fired before officers arrived, but it was not clear who injured the suspect.

Officers taped off the parking lot outside the bank as well as two nearby homes during the investigation.

Neighbors told WRAL News that they didn't hear anything out of the ordinary and didn't notice anything was going on until they looked outside.

Ashleigh Nelson lives across the street from the bank and said she heard the ambulance and saw a man being loaded onto a stretcher.

"The ambulance was here, the street was blocked and there were police, the fire department and they were escorting a gentleman out of the house across the street," Nelson said. "It definitely makes me feel uncomfortable."

Authorities said the suspect was taken to WakeMed for treatment but have not released specifics about his injuries.
