Police say 21-year-old Cary man was killed in Durham shooting

The Durham Police Department announced Thursday that Derek Ortiz, 21, from Cary, was the man who died in a Wednesday afternoon Durham shooting.

DURHAM, N.C. — A man was charged in connection with an August shooting that left a 21-year-old man dead.

Savon Dunston, 22, was charged with the murder of Derek Ortiz, 21, from Cary. Dunston was being held without bond in the Durham County Jail.

The shooting happened Aug. 17 around 2 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Roxboro Street.

A man, who was not identified by police, was taken into custody and charged with resisting, delaying and obstruction of justice.

A heavy police presence could be seen after a flurry of bullets flew around 2 p.m.

Another woman was taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, according authorities.
