ROXBORO, N.C. — A shooter turned a gun on himself Friday after shooting two people in Roxboro.

On Friday around 2:30 p.m., police officers responded to a shooting in the 200 block of West Morehead Street. When officers arrived, they found one person who died. Two others were suffering from gunshot wounds.

The alleged shooter, Keith Hughes, was one of the two injured people who were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On Sunday morning, police confirmed the alleged shooter, Keith Hughes, died on Saturday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The other person was shot in the upper torso.

Police said Hughes, 34, attempted to take his own life in what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"I think it's devastating," said Mary Lou Moore, a nearby resident.

Moore lives down the street where the shooting happened and says this is a relatively quiet neighborhood. But she says hearing about incidents like this makes her question its safety.

"It makes you feel scared," said Moore.

Police are working to notify the next of kin for the deceased and the second victim, who is in critical condition.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Roxboro Police Tip Line at 336-322-6072.
