FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 19-year-old man died after he was shot in the head by his friend while playing with guns, according to a 911 call released Wednesday.

Around 1 a.m., officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to a shooting at a home on the 700 block of Windy Hill Circle.

At the scene, they found Johnathon Scott Chavis, of the 7800 block of Rosewood Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. Chavis died at the scene.

"Me and my friend were just playing with guns, and I accidentally shot him in the head," the 911 caller said. "He picked up a pistol in the house and aimed it at me ...and I shot him in the head, and he's dead, ma'am. He's dead, he's dead."

Authorities charged Michael Ray Toler Jr., 18, of the 700 block of Windy Hill Circle, with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a handgun by a minor.

Toler told the 911 dispatcher that he thought the safety was on the gun.

"I thought the safety was on, and it went off on him," he said. "He's dead though. I know I'm going to go to jail. I shot my best friend."

Toler was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond.
