SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Authorities on Thursday released video of a July police chase in that began in Smithfield and ended in Wilson, where officers shot and killed the suspect.

Garrett Nelson Brooks, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, died during the July 21 incident. The State Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the case as it does anytime an officer shoots a civilian, said Thursday it has not concluded its work.

The two deputies identified as being involved in the shooting – John Harris, 30, of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, and Robert Raetz, 41, of the Johnston County Sheriff's Office – were on administrative leave following the shooting but have since returned to work.

Authorities said Brooks robbed a Kangaroo convenience store on North Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield and carjacked someone at a nearby car wash before leading authorities on a chase that ended on N.C 42, near Interstate 95, in Wilson.

Selma police released the video, which shows about 35 minutes of the chase concluding with the driver spinning out of control and the sound of shots being fired. It is unclear from the video who is firing a weapon.
