RALEIGH, N.C. — The man accused of driving onto a north Raleigh soccer field as kids were playing appeared in court Thursday afternoon and requested a court-appointed attorney.

Randy Gene Lloyd, 36, of Raleigh, was ordered held on a $30,000 bond, and told by the Wake County District Court judge that if he posts bond and is released, he must wear a device known as a continuous alcohol monitor that can detect if he has consumed alcohol.

Prosecutors told the judge that Lloyd has been convicted of driving while intoxicated at least three times in the past: in 2002, 2011 and March 2019.

Lloyd did not say much during the hearing, and he held his head down or looked away from the audience in the courtroom for much of the proceeding.

According to investigators, it all started when Lloyd drove through someone's yard and crashed into a parked car on Cahaba Way.

Then-witnesses say he pulled onto the WRAL soccer fields less than a mile away and barreled in the direction of a group of kids and a coach...narrowly missing them.

Gary Buete, president of the youth soccer group, said the venue has 21 fields that serve 14,000 players from around the Triangle. He said the league's soccer season ended a few weeks ago, which is why there weren't a lot of players on the field when the car drove onto the turf.

One woman told WRAL News that her son and four other boys were practicing soccer when the car came onto the field.

"It was surreal (and) we didn't know what to do" said the woman, who requested that her name not be used. "Honestly, the way the boys were positioned, moving a little bit to the left, it could have been a different scenario for one of them. "

Police said Lloyd left the scene. He was arrested a few blocks away.

He refused a breathalyzer test, arrest records show.

According to the arrest records in the case, Lloyd had a digital scale with which to measure marijuana. He was charged with possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
