Investigators say Memphis Police Officer Patric Ferguson forced the victim into the back of his patrol car, shot him with his personal weapon and disposed of the body with the help of a friend.
Memphis police have arrested one of their own, now former Memphis police officer Patrick Ferguson, and charged him with first degree murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. According to a police affidavit, 30 year old Robert Howard's girlfriend reported him missing last Wednesday. Amputees investigation led them to 29 year old Ferguson. When questioned, Ferguson admitted to kidnapping Howard on Mark Twain Street, forcing him into the back of his patrol car while Ferguson was on duty. Police say Ferguson drove several blocks away to Fraser Boulevard and Denver Street, where he told investigators he shot Howard as he sat in the back of his police vehicle and then drove to a location where he deposited Howard's body. That's really the shocking powder because the police officer is the last thing you expect from the police s basically wild on duty, so yeah, shock, Ferguson told police. The next day he recruited a friend, 28 year old Joshua Rodgers, to help get rid of the body. Investigators say Ferguson search history on his cell phone revealed multiple incriminating Internet searches related to cleaning up crime scenes and how to destroy DNA evidence. Police also say Ferguson bought cinderblocks chains and padlocks at a hardware store. Memphis police shut down part of Second Street north of downtown over the Wolf River Bridge this afternoon, where investigators say they believe they found the body of Robert Howard. Memphis police left behind several evidence markers here on the railing of the bridge, although police have not said exactly where this body was discovered. Police searched a home in the 7200 block of Mountain Ash and southeast Memphis, where they found a revolver Ferguson says he used in the murder. I was leaving out the neighborhood and saw a group of people in a police van God gathered. It looked like they would look for something. How many police officers were over here? I want to say probably two or three, maybe in my group of people as well. One neighbor we spoke to says the family that has lived in this house has been there for years and has always been friendly. That makes you really just wonder. You really just safe like that because you never know what was going on. Two houses down like you never know. In a statement Sunday, Memphis police director Mike Rawlings said Quote. No one is above the law knowing that a Memphis police officer someone who took an oath to protect and serve, made the decision to commit this horrific crime is devastating. His actions were not that of a law enforcement officer and should not reflect on fellow officers. END QUOTE The Memphis Police Association posted on Facebook Sunday, saying Quote Memphis Police Department Missing persons in homicide Investigators quickly and thoroughly got to the bottom of this horrendous crime. No one is above the law.
