SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A man died Sunday morning after jumping into the Little River in an attempt to flee from police.

Spring Lake police said officers were dispatched to Manchester Road near Bragg Boulevard at about 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a naked man running around.

The naked man, who was not identified, jumped into the Little River when officers tried to take him into custody, police said.

Crews with the Spring Lake Police Department and fire department surrounded the river in an attempt to get the man, who eventually swam to the edge.

The man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was pronounced dead at about 11:45 a.m.

Authorities are waiting for autopsy results from the medical examiner to determine the man’s cause of death.
