FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police were investigating after a motorcyclist was shot Friday afternoon during an apparent road rage incident near Cross Creek Mall, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, Edwin Dickerson, 52, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, but the injury was not believed to be life threatening.

He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment. but information about his condition was not available. Police did not immediately identify the victim.

Police said it appears that the incident, which occurred about 1:30 p.m. on the Morganton Road side of Cross Creek Mall, stemmed from a traffic incident between the motorcyclist and the driver of a white sedan in which one of the drivers cut the other one off.
The shooting occurred in the parking lot in front of Halloween Express and Torrid, but it did not involve either one of those businesses, authorities said.

"Somebody fired a shot from (inside) the white sedan at the motorcycle, striking the young man in the lower extremities of the leg," police Lt. Gary Womble said.

Dickerson and several bystanders called 911 to report the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Fayetteville Police Detective J. Bisner at (910) 676-2597 or Fayetteville / Cumberland County Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
