GREENVILLE, N.C. — A Beaufort County man wanted in his girlfriend's death was arrested after a short standoff in Greenville Saturday.

Authorities told multiple media outlets that Richard Leon Armstead, 21, killed his girlfriend, Miki Hatcher, 23, Saturday evening in their Chocowinity apartment. He then drove to an apartment in Greenville.

Greenville police said they negotiated with Armstead for nearly three hours before he gave up peacefully.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies said Hatcher had wounds to her head. An autopsy will be conducted. The couple lived together and had children.

Armstead was charged with murder and placed in the Beaufort County jail. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Armstead had previous convictions for common-law robbery and wanton injury to personal property in Martin County, according to state Department of Correction record. He was released in April 2009 after serving an 11-month sentence.
